SAP Cloud ERP
Which SAP Cloud ERP Is Right for You?
SAP offers several different cloud ERP paths, and the naming alone can be confusing. Here's what actually separates them.
"SAP Cloud ERP" isn't one product, it's a family of offerings aimed at different company sizes and levels of customization need. The right choice depends less on brand name and more on how much you need to tailor the system versus how quickly you want to go live.
S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition (often sold as "GROW with SAP")
A standardized, SaaS version of SAP's flagship ERP, built on pre-configured best-practice processes. Upgrades are automatic and continuous, and customization is limited to what SAP's extension tools allow. Best fit for companies that want to adopt proven processes quickly rather than replicate a highly specific way of working.
Best for: mid-size and growing companies that want a fast, standardized implementation.
S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition (often sold as "RISE with SAP")
A single-tenant, cloud-hosted version of S/4HANA that allows deep customization, similar to an on-premise deployment, but run and managed in the cloud, typically bundled with infrastructure, migration tools, and business process services. Upgrades are scheduled rather than continuous, giving more control over timing.
Best for: larger or more complex organizations migrating from on-premise SAP that need heavy customization or industry-specific processes.
SAP Business ByDesign
A fully multi-tenant SaaS ERP built for small to mid-size businesses and subsidiaries of larger enterprises, with integrated finance, HR, supply chain, and CRM out of the box. Lighter-weight and faster to deploy than S/4HANA Cloud, with less scope for deep customization.
Best for: smaller businesses or subsidiaries that need broad functional coverage without a large implementation project.
SAP Business One, Cloud Edition
SAP's ERP built specifically for small businesses, covering accounting, inventory, sales, and basic operations, hosted in the cloud or by a local partner. Simpler in scope than the S/4HANA product line, with a much lower cost and complexity footprint.
Best for: small businesses that need core financial and operational control without enterprise-scale complexity.
One thing they share: Joule
Regardless of which edition you're on, SAP's Joule AI copilot is built into the S/4HANA Cloud line (both Public and Private Edition) and is being extended across the wider SAP portfolio. It lets users ask questions in plain language and get answers, summaries, and suggested actions directly inside the SAP screens they already use.
A quick way to think about it

- Migrating a complex on-premise setup? S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (RISE with SAP).
